What is LawCPD?

LawCPD is a national CPD provider which gives lawyers the option of completing their mandatory CPD/CLE obligations by doing interactive online CPD courses.

Who can earn CPD points through LawCPD?

LawCPD provides online legal CPD and CLE courses for barristers and solicitors in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia, and for solicitors in Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.

Is LawCPD accredited to provide CPD training?

Most Australian jurisdictions which have compulsory CPD do not have a system of accreditation.  If you are a barrister or a solicitor from any state in Australia, you can most likely claim LawCPD courses if you believe they are relevant to your immediate or long term needs in relation to your professional development and the practice of law.  All the relevant detail is available at our CPD points requirements section.

In Western Australia, there is a system of accredition and LawCPD has been approved by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia as a quality assured provider of continuing professional development activities.

How many CPD points can I earn doing LawCPD courses?

In Western Australia, LawCPD’s courses are classified as an interactive activity which means you can earn 1 CPD point per hour long course completed and up to 10 CPD points each period.  In other jurisdictions, solicitors and barristers can earn 1 CPD point per hour by completing website based programs, which includes LawCPD’s interactive online learning courses.  You can read more on this at our CPD points requirements section.

What is involved in doing a LawCPD course?

Each online CPD course contains professional written material, engaging interactive content and short multi-choice questions to reinforce your learning. There are also links to external materials, such as the full text of certain cases cited in the course (which links to AustLII).

Each course generally has between six to eight sections and an end of course assessment.  You need to score 70% or more on the end of course assessment to earn your CPD points for the course.  Each assessment has a marking guide which displays which questions you got correct and incorrect at the end of the assessment.

What else do I receive when I purchase a LawCPD course?

When you purchase a LawCPD courses you also receive a number of additional benefits, including:

  • MyCPD – personalized user account which tracks your learning in real time and provides a record of all points earned through LawCPD;
  • External links to cases and legislation within the course;
  • Assessment marking guide;
  • Downloadable PDF version of the paper for each course; and
  • Certificate of completion for each course.

Do I need to complete a course straight after purchasing it?

No, once you have purchased a course you will have access to it for as long as it is published on the LawCPD website. This includes any updates made to the course after it is published.

This means you can purchase a course today, then complete it in a week or even a couple of months time.  For example, you could purchase a course in one CPD year, then complete it in the next one (if you already had enough points in the current CPD period).  It also means you can purchase courses during special offer periods then complete them later.

Do I have to complete the entire course in one sitting?

No, you can start, stop and resume where you left off as many times as you like at no extra charge.

How long does it take to complete each course?

Different courses take different lengths of time, but you can tell how long each one will take by how many CPD points you will earn for doing the course.  For example, a 1 CPD point course will only take around 1 hour to complete, whereas a 1.5 CPD point course will take around 1 and a half hours to complete.

Do I have to complete the course on one platform?

No, you can mix and match!  Here's a One Hour Course example: Perform 30 minutes of learning using your home PC one evening, another 15 minutes using your handheld (Blackberry, iPhone or N-Series) while travelling to work on the train, and the final 15 minutes on your handheld on the train trip home.

If I exit the course partway through, do I have to start from the beginning?

No, you have the option of resuming where you left off, starting at the beginning or continuing anywhere in-between using our easy navigation options).

When do I accrue my CPD points, do I just need to finish the course?

No, you also need to complete the end of course assessment and score 70% or more in order to earn your CPD points for that course.

Will I receive a certificate for each course I have completed?

Yes, you can download a certificate of completion for each course you complete by clicking on the "Certificate" icon next to the completed course on your MyCPD page.
